Kingdom of God Appears in a Person Mark 1 9-13-12

WELCOME
It is so glad to see each of you ladies here tonight. Did you enjoy your Bible Study? How are you enjoying your Core? Did your Core Leader contact you last week and pray for you?

Mark 2 The Good News is Mark is a wonderful book with a plethora of parables and stories about Jesus. The Bad News is I can’t cover Chapter 1 in 20 mins.

Good News and Bad News.
Bad News: A guy falls out of an airplane.
Good News: He has a parachute.
Bad News: The parachute doesn't work.
Good News: There is a hay stack down below.
Bad News: There is a pitchfork in the hay stack.
Good News: He missed the pitchfork.
Bad News: He missed the hay stack.
What is the Bad News? Seems to me most of our news on television and in the paper today is BAD. Worse than bad; horrible, awful, unthinkable!
But the GOOD NEWS is God had a plan for our Salvation.
I know “Who is in charge!” of the election, who is in charge of my Social Security, who is in charge of my health and my money!!!
Jesus Christ is Lord of all; Sovereign over all the earth.  The news we need to spread is
1 Timothy 1:15 “Jesus came into the world to save sinners.”
The good news that Jesus paid the price to redeem me from all my sins, once and for all.
PRAY
God had a plan for our Salvation
God prepared the way for Our Redeemer vv.1-8
Jesus proved His Obedience vv. 9-15
Jesus knew His Purpose  vv. 16-45

Mark 1:1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
Mark offers to the gentile world the Good News. He opens his gospel with the words that tells us Jesus Christ is the son of God.  At Jesus baptism by John, the Spirit descends and a voice from heaven declares “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” In Mark 15:39 After the crucifixion of Christ on the cross His divinity is again validated by a Gentile. The Roman centurion utters, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
God prepared the way for Jesus the Messiah vv.1-8
God had prepared for our Salvation before the beginning of time. Even as He gave the 10 Commandments to Moses, God knew we were unable to save ourselves.
Mark begins his Good News with an introduction of the forerunner of Christ. Quoting Isaiah the prophet;
2-“Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
who will prepare your way,
3 the voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight,’”
In ancient times messengers were sent ahead to prepare the people for the visit of a King. Even with the hugh crowds that thronged to see this unusual man and hear his message,  John the Baptist was careful to magnify Jesus and not himself. John’s message of repentance and  baptism of sinners were preparation for the people to be ready to meet and trust the Messiah, Jesus Christ.
Have you accepted God’s plan for your Salvation?
Jesus Obedience to the Father
      Baptism in the Spirit vv.1-8
      Wilderness Experience vv.9-15
      His Ministry vv.16-45

Jesus was baptized not because he had sinned, but as an act of obedience to His Father's purposes.
The Spirit of God descended on Him as a dove. It was a proclamation that identified Jesus Christ with the coming Messianic Kingdom. Also, it marks the beginning of Jesus’ ministry on earth.
Wilderness Experience
vv 12-13 The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.

Again, why was Jesus who knew no sin required to go into the wilderness, suffer hunger, loneliness and fatigue then be subjected to temptation?

Hebrews 2:18 (ESV) For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Application: Have you ever been in the wilderness of divorce, loss of a loved one, or without financial support? When you are hungry, angry, lonely, or tired you are the perfect target for the Satan’s schemes. Remember your best defense is the WORD of God.

Hebrews 4:12 (ESV) For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword.

God’s plan for our Salvation includes a guidebook: “the Bible.” Have you committed key verses from God’s WORD for you defense?
His Ministry
Mark introduces Jesus as he began his ministry with two crucial actions the very private event of battling Satan in the wilderness and the very public action of calling his first disciples.

“I will make you to become fishers of men”

Jesus first recorded act of ministry was calling four fishermen.

Mark 1:16Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, and called them by name.
Not that He simply knows their name,  but He knew them. He drew them to Himself with the Words, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.

It is important to note that when Jesus called these men, they were not at that time what Jesus wanted them to become. He did not require them to change anything in their lives before they became His.

The Gospels revealed most of these men were:
• common laborers
• poor
• uneducated
• little spiritual perception
• self-centered
• often harsh
• proud
• weak
• cowardly
• selfish

Do any of these describe you before you met Jesus? God’s plan for our Salvation does not  require us to change before we accept His call.

You’ve heard it said “You catch ‘em and He’ll clean ‘em.” He promised to “make” them (poieo) to “become” fishers of men.

“Fishers of men” with a common description used by philosophers of that day.  For teachers to capture a man's mind they would bait the hook with their teaching and acquire disciples.
It was likely that at least seven of Jesus’ disciples were fishermen. Jesus knew the qualities of successful fishermen would be patience, energy, stamina, faith, and tenacity, courage, and the ability to work together. These fishermen left family ties, their occupation, and their belongings to follow Christ. Hook, Line & Sinker
Think about it. When Christ calls us, what are our priorities and impediments that must be surrendered in order to be free to follow Jesus.
Illustration: Last year in third grade my grandson Brayden studied about “opportunity cost” in Economics. The thing that you must give up to choose another item is called your opportunity cost.
As Dietrich Bonhoeffer pointed out in his book, The Cost of Discipleship,
“ Jesus does not call us to cheap grace.  He calls us to costly discipleship.”
What He wills us to become, He promises to fulfill. 1 Thess.: 5:24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.

Application- Ladies what is your opportunity cost to follow Jesus and become fishers of men?  Will you join in God’s plan for Salvation to the lost?

What was Jesus PURPOSE?
·        Teach in the synagogue v.21
·        Cast out unclean spirits vv.23-28
·        Heal the sick vv. 30-33
·        Spend time alone with His Father v. 35
·        Preach to throughout all Galilee 37-45
·        Fulfill God’s Plan of Salvation
Jesus found time to pray
Even the Son of God needed alone time with His Father. How much more do we need to spend time in prayer! Think about accepting His Call to follow Him and to become fishers of men.
Joseph Stowell (pastor Moody Church) “We have become quite happy to call ourselves Christians with little or no thought of following.”
Paul Harvey said, "Too many Christians are no longer fishers of men, but keepers of the aquarium."
What does it mean to follow Jesus?
John Hamby suggests
•Lay aside your personal ambition and plans in order to fully follow Christ.
•Purpose in your life to better reflect the light of Christ to those around you.
•Look for and take opportunities to share with others what Jesus has done for you.
Perhaps you are thinking, “I can’t witness to people about Jesus. I can’t even talk to my family.”
FINAL ILLUSTRATION
Moody SS Teacher There was a man in Texas that couldn’t read, but he got himself a pocket full of tracts and went out to the highway and started hitchhiking. When someone picked him up, he would ask them to read the tract to him and then he would tell them what Jesus had done for Him. He would try to lead that person to Jesus. When he finished witnessing to that individual, he would get out and hitch a ride back the other way. Again, asking the person to read him the tract and telling them about Jesus. In his first year, this illiterate man had brought 168 people to the Lord. He wasn’t a theologian, but he knew who Jesus was!
What does responding publicly mean to us in this time of political debate? We as Christians have been silent too long.  When we vote in November; we need stand for what is right and vote the Bible.
Would you choose to follow God’s plan for your life?  PRAY

When you find a bargain or an incredible cleaning product, we want to share the news with all our friends. Me I share it with everyone that might be in the cashiers line. This bottle filled with you favorite beverage costs $2.50 at one of my grandchildren favorite places. On each return visit the bottle can be refilled for $.53 over and over. I’ve had this one for 2 years. I can’t understand why anyone would pay $1.99 for a large drink, when the refillable bottle is only $.50 more.
Key Verse“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve,
and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45
Mark show humanness of Jesus. He shows him tired, falling asleep in the boat or angry when the disciples turned away the children who came to him,
Eugene Peterson author of the Message says “Mark wasted no time in getting down to business a single sentence introduction not a digression to be found from beginning to end. There's an air of breathless excitement in nearly every sentence he writes the sooner we get the message the better off we'll be. The message is good, incredibly good, God is here and he's on our side”
Mark is in a hurry to tell us what happened in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, the event that reveals the truth of God to us. He doesn't want to wait a minute to share with Gentiles that Jesus is passionate to save us.

2 Samuel 23-24 David and Jesus

2 SAMUEL 23-24 David and Jesus
Throughout the lecture I will attempt to point out some of the many qualities of King David as they appear as a foreshadowing of Christ.

• David Last Song
• Last Temptation
• Sacrifice Offering Himself for his people
We all need to be more like Jesus.

David Last Song
2 Samuel 23: 1-7 The last words of David were spoken to him by the Spirit of the LORD. His praise acknowledges that God is the Rock of Israel, and those He calls to lead must be just, ruling in the fear of the LORD.

SHEPHERD
• David was a shepherd boy when Samuel anointed him King
• Psalm 23 David writes the LORD is my Shepherd,( notice in the picture) “Thy rod and they staff they comfort me.”
As a shepherd we must lead our sheep, not herd them like cattle.
I apologize ladies if I sometimes I have been so eager to obey the rules that I have not had the mercy and comforting spirit of a Shepherd.
John 10: 14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.
I covenant with you to more like Jesus and follow His example of a Good Shepherd.
MAN OF SORROW

Verse 5 In his oracle David admits that his house is not right with God.
What a tragedy to be chased from the Jerusalem he loved by his favored son, Absalom.

• Earlier exiled by Saul, David hid in caves in the Kidron valley. The name "Kidron" means "murky, dark,"
• David was a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief, suffering chiefly from those of His own household.
• "Gethsemane" where Jesus prayed fervently to His Father means "oil press"
Matt. 26:38 Jesus says, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even unto death . . . ."

HUMBLE SERVANT
Though David sometimes failed in his personal life, as we all do, he never failed in his relationship with GOD Almighty. He was a true servant, and was obedient to God’s discipline.
• After being anointed King, still worked as a shepherd, soldier, harpest
• Often called the Song of the Cross Psalm 22:6 David, though a king, still looked upon himself as… a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the people.
• Many times we see David on his face before God, repentant and covered in ashes,
• Fleeing from Jerusalem he is weary and worn, barefoot with his head covered
• Even when God denied him the honor of building God’s house, David gathered the materials to prepare for the construction of Temple by his son Solomon.
v.5 David had confidence in the everlasting covenant that God had made with him. He had satisfaction in his heart, for he says- this is all my salvation, and all my desire.
Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’” 2 Samuel 7:16
Jesus Christ is our perfect example of humility and servitude.
Philipians 2:
6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross!
Let us strive to humbly serve and live to be more like Jesus.
BETRAYED AND REJECTED
King David left Jerusalem and fled from his son Absalom. Both David and Jesus were throneless kings, accompanied by their closest friends yet rejected by their own people.
Prov. 18:2 says, ". . . there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother
Ch. 24 Tells us David has his INNER CIRCLE 2 sets of three mighty men and the 30 chief men. Joab name is conspicuously missing in this list?

Jesus had his inner circle Peter, James and John and 12 Disciples

Matt 17:1 Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There he was transfigured before them.

Mark 14:32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”

Betrayed by Judas for 30 silver coins, even the "inner circle" denied him at his trial.
Only John was present at the foot of the cross.

MAN OF PRAYER
• 2 Samuel 7 After Nathan explains that David a man of war would not build a house for the LORD David went and sat before the LORD and prayed
• 2 Samuel 15 David prayed, turn Ahithophel’s counsel into foolishness.”
• Many of the psalms were prayers “ O LORD, hear my prayer, listen to my cry for mercy” PSALMS 4, 17, 55, 61, 72, 86, 142, 143
• Ch. 24 and 1 Chronicles 21 David prays to take the plague on himself.
17 David said to God, “Was it not I who ordered the fighting men to be counted? I am the one who has sinned and done wrong. These are but sheep. What have they done? O LORD my God, let your hand fall upon me and my family, but do not let this plague remain on your people.”
JESUS is our model for prayer-
• Prayed early in the morning in solitude
• Before breaking bread to feed 5000, at Passover meal, with men on road Emmaus
• On mount of transfiguration
• On the Mount of Olives
• Jesus prayed for His disciples and for all believers
• He prayed in praise to God, the Father and prayers of thanksgiving
• Jesus prayed in a posture and with an attitude of reverent submission
• Jesus prayed in times of anguish, in Gesemane, from the Cross
James 5:16 The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective
Let us learn to pray in praise and thanksgiving as Jesus did.

TEMPTED
2 Samuel 24 Once again God proves David’s humanity by testing him. 1 Chronicles tells us that Satan provoked this census. But we know Satan is not in control, sometimes God uses Satan to do his bidding.
James 1:13
When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted, by his own evil desire,

The fact that David numbers the fighting men is not the main thing to focus on but the reason. Was David's purpose for numbering the men of war that he might delight or glory in Israel's own number of fighting men? Had David failed to trust in the Lord and forgotten that God alone was their strength.

Psalm 18
The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.
He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Even Joab knew this and tried to warn David. You will notice Joab did not number the tribe of Benjamin, maybe in response to David’s pride.
Let us depend upon God and glory in His power. Praise Him for the work of His hands, not anything that we have done.
LORD let us be like Jesus, tempted yet he did not sin.
SAVIOR
• Ch.25 3 days of pestilence 17 When David saw the angel who was striking down the people, he said to the LORD, “I am the one who has sinned and done wrong. These are but sheep. What have they done? Let your hand fall upon me and my family.”
• Jesus Christ did for us what David did for Israel: offering himself in our place, fighting the battle for us and giving us the victory.

Ch. 24:18-25 On that day Gad went to David and said to him, “Go up and build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of A rau nah the Jebusite.”
Araunah offers everything to the King- oxen for the burnt offering, threshing sledges and ox yokes for the wood.
24 I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”
Matthew Henry says Burnt-offerings to the glory of God's justice; peace-offerings to the glory of his mercy.
Some people make their sacrifice to God cheap and easy for themselves, and are best pleased with what costs them the least aggravation or money. Ladies all that we have and own belongs to God. Let us offer Him a broken and contrite heart.
Christ is our altar, our sacrifice; in him alone we may expect to find favor with God.
MERCIFUL
• David was merciful to Saul, refusing to seek vengeance at least twice.
• He made a covenant with Jonathan and Saul to grant mercy to their family. Mephibosheth ate at David’s table the rest of his days.
• Allowed Absalom to return home, granted amnesty to

Luke 23:34 Jesus said, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.
1Peter13 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
LORD help us to be merciful to each other as Jesus did.

KING
• David was the eighth and youngest son of Jesse from the kingly tribe of Judah.
• Direct descendent of Ruth the Moabite.
• Born in Bethlehem, He is called Israel greatest King for 40 years
• David foreshadows Christ is in his role as king.

Luke 1:32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, And He shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of His kingdom there shall be no end

WARRIOR KING Revelation 19:11
In the story of David and Goliath, David fights as the representative of his people-he fights for them – in their place – and wins the victory for them. Goliath is the enemy of God's people, and type of Satan foreshadowing the conflict between the Serpent and the woman's Seed.

Christ’s death wins the victory for His children and delivers all believers from the penalty of sin and death. Christ will return one day soon as a WARRIOR KING.
REVELATION 19: 11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war. 12 His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. 13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14 The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.”[a] He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

Ladies I don’t want to leave here tonight without giving you the opportunity to come to the altar.
Will you choose be more like Jesus and declare him KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS?

There are some SIMILARITIES in lives of Samson and of Jesus Christ –
• Births were foretold about an angel
• Dedicated to God from the womb.
• Both men moved in the power of the Holy Spirit.
• They were rejected by their people and
• Bound and tortured at the hands of their enemies.
Many CONTRASTS between Samson’s life and Jesus
• Samson live a life of sin;
• Jesus life was sinless
• Sampson at the time at his death prayed, Judges 16:28
I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes
• Jesus prayed, “ Father forgive them, for they know not what they do”
• In death Samson's arms were outstretched in wrath.
• In death Jesus arms were outstretched in love
• Sampson died.
• Jesus Christ lives
Book of Ruth
The blessing of the women of Bethlehem was to Naomi and they predict that the name of Ruth’s first born will be famous. The author of the book of Ruth carefully lists the lineage to fulfill the prophesy.
14-15 “Praise be to the LORD, who this day has not left you without a kinsman-redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel! 15 He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.”
BOAZ AS KINSMAN REDEEMER
• Urged Ruth to stay in his field
• Offered her safety, food, and water
• Allowed Ruth to glean among the sheaves
• Charges workers to leave her extra
• Ordered workers not to touch her
• Redeemed Elimelech's land
• Took responsibility for Naomi and Ruth
God is the true hero in this story. His boundless love provided a kinsman-redeemer for us. Jesus redeemed us and gave us life and a future.

SAMUEL AND JESUS
• Miracle births
1 Samuel 1: 5 the LORD had closed her womb
Luke 1 34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
• Dedicated to the LORD before they were born
• 1 Samuel 1:27 I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him. 28 So now I give him to the LORD. For his whole life he will be given over to the LORD.”
• Luke 2:31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. Grow in favor with God and men
• 1 Samuel 2:26 And the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor with the LORD and with men.
• Luke 2:52

• DAVID AND JESUS
• Born in Bethlehem of Judea Luke 2:4
SHEPHERD
• David was a shepherd boy when Samuel anointed him King
• Psalm 23 David writes the LORD is my Shepherd
• John 10: 11I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
MAN OF PRAYER
• 2 Samuel 15:31 So David prayed, “O LORD, turn Ahithophel’s counsel into foolishness.”
• 2 Samuel 24:25 David built an altar to the LORD there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. Then the LORD answered prayer in behalf of the land, and the plague on Israel was stopped.
• PSALMS 4, 17, 55, 61, 72, 86, 142, 143
O LORD, hear my prayer, listen to my cry for mercy
JESUS is our model for prayer-
• Prayed early in the morning in solitude
• Before breaking bread to feed 5000, at Passover meal, with men on road Emmaus
• On mount of transfiguration
• Mount of Olives
• Jesus prayed for His disciples and for all believers
• Jesus prayed in praise to God, the Father
• Jesus prayed prayers of thanksgiving
• Jesus prayed in a posture and with an attitude of reverent submission
• Jesus prayed in times of anguish, in Gesemane, from the Cross
James 5:16 The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective only one in all Scripture termed a "man after God's own heart."
HUMBLE
• After being anointed King, still worked as a shepherd, soldier,
• A humble man has lower thoughts of himself. David, though a king, still looked upon himself as… a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the people. Psalm 22:6
• 2 Sam. 7:18 "Then went king David in, and sat before the Lord; and he said, Who am I, O Lord God? and what is my house, that Thou hast brought me hitherto?"
• Even when God refuse to let him build the Temple David gathered the materials to prepare for the construction of God’s house by his son Solomon

SERVANT
"Enter not into judgment with Thy servant: for in Thy sight shall no man living be justified" (Ps. 143:2).
Though David sometimes failed in his personal life, as we all do, he never failed in his relationship with GOD Almighty. He was a true servant, and was obedient to God’s discipline.

MERCIFUL
David was merciful to Saul, refusing to seek vengeance at least twice. He made a covenant with Jonathan and Saul to grant mercy to their family. Mephibosheth ate at David’s table the rest of his days. Allowed Absalom to return home, granted amnesty to
Luke 23:34 Jesus said, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.
REJECTED
King David left Jerusalem and fled from his son Absalom. Both David and Jesus were throneless kings, accompanied by their closest friends and rejected by their own people.
INNER CIRCLE
David has his 2 sets of three mighty men and the 30 chief men.

Jesus gave the disciples directions to sit and pray; He then took His "inner circle" further into the garden with him.

Prov. 18:2 says, ". . . there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
MAN OF SORROW
David hid in cave in the Kidron valley. The name "Kidron" means "murky, dark," David was a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief, suffering chiefly from those of His own household.
"Gethsemane" where Jesus prayed means "oil press"

Matt. 26:38 Jesus says, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even unto death . . . ."
KING
David served for 40 years as King of Israel and Judah
David foreshadows Christ is in his role as king.
Luke 1:32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, And He shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of His kingdom there shall be no end

WARRIOR
In the story of David and Goliath, David fights as the representative of his people-he fights for them – in their place – and wins the victory for them. Goliath is the enemy of God's people, and type of Satan foreshadowing the conflict between the Serpent and the woman's Seed.

Christ’s death wins the victory for His children and delivers all believers from the penalty of sin and death. Christ will return one day soon as a WARRIOR KING.

REVELATION19: 11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True.

Will you choose Jesus as your KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS?
